Invoking a dynamic WCF service Another interesting reason to host services in a program: This approach enables you to create desktop applications that can listen for updates from some kind of central server. Traditionally, developers have used these kinds of applications to poll a central server; however, you should be aware that this can lead to a large amount of unnecessary network traffic if the polling is too frequent. Listing 11-15 demonstrates how to do this. It shows a blank form that hosts a service that will listen to updates from a client; in this case, the update will be a background image to display. The service defines one function, ReceiveImage, which receives the binary data that makes up an image. The implementation of the service raises an event, newImgEvent, every time an image is received; this enables you to update the form every time a new image is received. Hooking the form up to the event is straightforward: newImgEvent.Add(fun img -> form.BackgroundImage <- img)

The publishing wizard is a quick way to create a ClickOnce deployment, but it doesn t allow you to adjust all the possible options. To get access to more ClickOnce settings, double-click the Properties node in the Solution Explorer, and then click the Publish tab. You ll see the settings shown in Figure B-8.

For example, the first two text boxes allow you to choose the publishing location (the place where the ClickOnce files will be placed, as set in step 1 of the wizard) and the installation location (the place from which the user will run the setup, as set in step 2 of the wizard). The Install Mode setting allows you to choose whether the application should be installed on the local computer or run in an online-only mode, as described earlier in this appendix. At the bottom of the window, the Publish Wizard... button launches the wizard you saw earlier, and the Publish Now button publishes the project using the previous settings. The following sections discuss the settings that you haven t already seen.

The Publish Version section sets the version of your application that s stored in the ClickOnce manifest file. This isn t the same as the assembly version, which you can set in the Application tab, although you might set both to match.
